Keep Shady Shores Beautiful
Under the direction of a master naturalist, the town is working with the Corp of Engineers to make the area north of the boat ramp a park like setting for our town’s residents and visitors. This is a 7 acre parcel that is very wooded with lots of briars and brambles, and invasive plants (poison ivy, Johnson grass, wild crab apples etc), that need to come out to make it more accessible to humans.
Kay Crowe, our master naturalist, has presented a plan to the Corp which they have accepted to make some trails, a bird viewing station, pockets of wildlife habitat and plantings of wildflowers and other native plants. Presently we have Kay and Jean Bowers, Cindy Spencer, Patty Durkin and Polly Carter. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Join us when the weather gets cooler. A new start- up date will be posted soon. Bring your garden shears, tree loppers, and any other tools you can work with. Wear heavy gloves, long sleeves and working shoes. SEE YOU THERE! For more information please contact Polly Carter, 940-321-9527.
3/31/2011 - Update
Big Sandy park North is coming along. We have 4 volunteers every Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. We are clearing out brush and brambles working our way towards the lake. We hope to see the wildflowers and native grasses that were planted last fall start emerging soon. These plantings will help with the soil erosion around the lake and help reduce the chance of wildfires. Come join us or just stop for a visit.
9/1/2011 - Update
The Clean up will begin again as soon as the weather gets cooler.
